The major baroque architecture in Salzburg was built by the prince archbishops. The main restructuring of Salzburg's old center to place under the rule of Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau at around 1600, and was completed by Johann Ernst von Thun in roughly 1700. Salzburg was to be praised as one of the most impressive principalities among the Germanic territories. There is a noticeable progression in artistic development within the archbishops residence and surrounding area of the Prince City, from the first stages of Baroque dynamics to the final period of 18th Century pastel colored shapes of the Rococo.
